How Does Your Heart Work?

Your heart is an amazing muscle that pumps blood filled with oxygen and nutrients to the cells and organs in your body. Amazing, right? Watch the short video below to see how blood travels through your heart every hour, minute, and second of your life!

Fun Facts: 

  • Your heart beats, on average, 60 - 100 beats per minute. 
  • Children and infants have higher normal heart rates
    • Newborns:  70 -160 beats per minute
    • Infants: 80 - 160 beats per minute
    • Children (ages 1-4): 80 - 130 beats per minute
    • Children (ages 5-9): 75 - 115 beats per minute
    • Children 10 and up: 60 - 100 beats per minute 
  • Your heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood per day!
  • The heart beats about 100,000 times per day. 
  • The beating sound that comes from your heart is the opening and closing of the valves between your atrium (upper section the the heart) and your ventricle (the lower section of your heart).
  • Valves in the heart keep blood from going backwards.
